The SDLP man called on Transport NI to implement the measures after being contacted by a parent of two primary school children who was involved in an accident outside the school in the past week.

Mr McGlone said: “Following a recent accident involving a parent of two primary school children whose car was struck while stationary outside the school, I spoke to the Prinicipal of Ballylifford Primary School as well as the parent involved.

“Fortunately no-one was seriously injured in this recent accident. But residents have been concerned about the speed of traffic through the area and its impact on road safety for some time.

“I have since contacted Transport NI urging them to immediately implement the traffic calming measures that had been agreed earlier this year.

“Those measures included new 30mph speed limits outside the school along stretches of the Ballinderry Bridge Road and Ballygillen Road in Ballylifford.

“The new 30mph speed limit will be particularly welcome, as this may allow Roads Service to introduce other traffic calming measures in areas where they were previously prevented from doing so by law.

“Roads Service must complete the legislative process required and implement the new speed limits in Ballylifford, and at Derrychrin and Drumullan as Cllr Christine McFlynn and I have lobbied for.

“I urge all road users to take great care and always reduce their speed when approaching any school location.

“The SDLP will continue to lobby for the introduction of further traffic calming measures in these and other areas to improve the safety of local residents and all road users.”
