Lurgan 400 art project

AN art project to celebrate Lurgan's 400th anniversary is taking shape.

Youth workers from Lurgan Youth Annexe and members of Mourneview and Grey Estates Community Association have worked in partnership to engage a group of young people in a community art project to celebrate Lurgan 400.

Artist Tim McCarthy from Re-ink-our-Nation has helped facilitate the project at Pollock Drive.

The young people have been very creative and identified specific images which have historical, cultural and sports themes.

Some of the images depicted on the painting are Lurgan Park fountain, Brownlow House, Master McGrath and Shankill Parish Church. The crests and emblems of some of Lurgan's sports clubs will also be displayed on the wall at Pollock Drive.

The young people's participation has been central to the on-going success of the project and this process has given them opportunities to learn about the historical, cultural and economic development of Lurgan over the past 400 years. Some of the group recently took part in a tour of Brownlow House organised by Michelle Hanlon.

Those working on the project thanked Craigavon Borough Council's Good Relations department for the funding and Marion Weir in the Arts Department for her help.
