Lurgan man did 54mph in a 30mph zone

When police stopped a Lurgan man for a speeding offence they found that a tyre on his vehicle was defective and he had no test certificate.

Anthony O’Hare (25), Portland Manor, Lurgan, was fined £100 last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for an excess speed offence.

He was also ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy and given three points.

As well he was fined £75 for having a defective tyre and £75 for not having a valid test certificate.

The court heard he was detected driving at 54mph in a 30mph zone on the Portadown Road, Lurgan, on August 7 this year.

Police found that the front nearside tyre was defective with metal wire exposed and the test certificate had expired on June 16.

A solicitor representing O’Hare said the car had failed the MOT because of a number of defects and he had a re-test arranged for August 25.

He added that the defendant did not know the tyre was defective.

He accepted he should not have been driving the car but had only driven a short distance.
