Lurgan man wanted by FBI

NEWS reached the 'MAIL' in May 1991 of a Lurgan man on the run from the FBI.

The man, who lived in Lurgan before heading to America, was at the time suspected of being in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

He was wanted by the FBI in connection with the murder of a Spanish ex-army officer.

And US experts were studying extradition laws to see if they could bring him back for questioning. They believed he was living in Buenos AIres with at least three members of his family.

“We have been reliably informed that he is now living in Argentina and we are following that line of inquiry,” said the investigating detective. ”He is with three relatives in Buenos Aires and we are now checking out our extradition arrangements with Argentina.”

It was on September 4 the previous year that a man with a distinct Northern Ireland accent went berserk after sharing beer and pizza with the victim in a bar in New York’s Queen’s district.

He ranted to a terrified barman: “What do you think about working with those Spanish guys?” He then placed a gun at the victim’s head and fired twice. The former army officer died in hospital a few hours later.

The suspect was also wanted in the Republic of Ireland in connection with the INLA-linked murder of a detective during a robbery in the early 80s.
