Mackle expresses youth unemployment concerns

SINN Féin Councillor Liam Mackle has expressed concern at the increase in the rate of unemployment amongst those aged between eighteen and twenty-four.

Speaking after the release of the latest figures Cllr Mackle said: “These figures should be a massive concern to everyone. The rate of unemployment of those aged 18-24 has now reached 23.5%. That represents an incredible 5.2% increase over the past year.

“Almost one in four of our young adults are now out of work and their prospects for employment in the current economic conditions look poor. The Assembly Executive, local Councils, Trade Unions and society as a whole needs to focus on the issue of youth unemployment.

“We have to develop radical initiatives and bring a new approach to this issue if we are to save a whole generation of young people from being cast adrift.”
