Macosquin WI monthly meeting

MACOSQUIN Women’s Institute met in the Parish Hall for the February meeting when president Mrs Daphne King welcomed members along with Lulu Kane who was proposed as a new member by Valerie Cochrane.

The speaker for the evening was David Adams, a Home Safety Officer with Coleraine, Ballymoney and Moyle councils as well as a part-time fire officer. He humorously entertained members as well as raising awareness of dangers in the home in order to avoid accidents.

He also reminded the over 65s that by completing a referral form which he provided, he could do a home safety check for them. David donated some items from his home safety demonstration for a raffle which were won by Eileen Richmond, Betsy Trevor and Lulu Kane.

The competition for a limerick beginning “The night David came to our hall” was won by Agnes Kennedy with Elma Irwin in second place and Anne McKane in third.

After a delicious supper and quiz involving word connections the evening concluded with A Countrywoman’s Song.

The next meeting will be the annual dinner in the Lodge Hotel on Wednesday, March 14.

McClarty backs Wear Red Day campaign

COLERAINE councillor and local MLA, David Mclarty, has added his voice to the growing number of well-known local people supporting the British Heart Foundation’s Wear Red Day this Friday.

“If you only look after one heart this February, make it your own. People, myself included, often take heart health for granted,” said the former deputy speaker.

“We only realise the need to look after our hearts when something goes wrong. You do not need to dramatically change your lifestyle.

“Personally, I try to walk daily, eat better and I gave up smoking a number of years ago. I admit it can be difficult to adjust, but it gets easier and I feel much better for it. These small changes are much preferable to the alternative. “

Kilimanjaro trekkers holding fundraisers

TWO Coleraine men are planning to participate in Trekking Kilimanjaro 2012 in aid of Aware Defeat Depression.

Gary Tosh and Chris Nicholl will be holding a series of fundraising events locally before they set off on their adventure on April 16.

The first of these will be a Coffee Morning at Coleraine Christian Centre in Stone Row this Saturday (February 25) from 11am to 1pm.

The boys will also taking part in a bag packing day in Sainsbury’s supermarket on March 3 from 10am to 6pm.

THE National Trust is hosting a volunteer’s day at Carrick-a-Rede fishery cottage on Saturday (February 25) at 10.30am.
