Magee students build a better future

The University of Ulster Students’ Union placed their Volunteer Centre right in the middle of Work Experience Week at Magee to encourage students to volunteer, gain experience and learn new skills.

At the Students’ Union students worry about not being able to get a job when they graduate as they have no work experience, but they can’t get work experience without a job. Therefore local young people are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

The Students’ Union Volunteer Centre aims to help students find unpaid work to gain the skills and experience they need to get a job after graduation. Not only are these students helping others through volunteering, but they are also helping themselves build a credible CV for the future.

John Cunningham, VP of Academic and Student Affairs at the Magee campus said: “There are real benefits to be had from gaining work experience while studying at university. Students bring real talent and passion to local organisations and charities while developing and learning new skills-it’s a win-win. I believe work experience builds confidence too and it is so important that our students believe in themselves and their abilities.”

Whatever your reason for wanting to get involved Work Experience Week highlights the importance of gaining quality work experience and students that volunteer can also qualify for the University of Ulster’s Edge Award.
