James Montgomery (65), retired, of O’Hara Road, was also fined a total of £515 for driving with excess alcohol, careless driving and failing to stop, remain and report an accident in which he was involved on the morning of January 13.

Montgomery told Magherafelt Court that he had previously admitted the charges because his head had been in “big turmoil at the time and I just wanted it over and done with.” He explained that he had been in a friend’s house where he had a few drinks and fallen asleep in a chair with the car keys in his pocket.

Convicting him of all charges, the judge said he should have gone to the police when his conscience struck him and brought witnesses to support his case.
