Maghera is the place to slow down...

Mid Ulster have been highlighted in statistics published by the Northern Ireland Road Safety Partnership (NIRSP).

Two roads in Magherafelt area are in the top 20 places in Northern Ireland where you are most likely to pick up a speeding ticket.

And Maghera appears to be the place to slow down...

With a total of 714 detections, the Tobermore Road in Maghera, leads the way.

It is closely followed by Glenshane Road where 651 motorists were clocked breaking the speed limit last year. The NIRSP report reveals there were 46,500 detections in the course of the year - the vast majority by mobile speed cameras.

The highest speed recorded last year was 99mph. There were four across the province, including one on the Glenshane Road. Other hotspots in Mid Ulster for speeding offences included:

* Drum Road, Cookstown - 566

* Magherafelt Road, Moneymore - 99

* A29 Cookstown Road - 36

According to PSNI statistics, 500 people were involved in road accidents where excess speed was the main factor.

These included 14 fatalities and 67 cases where the victim was seriously injured.

The NIRSP aims to support efforts to reduce speeding through targeted enforcement, educational campaigns and other initiatives. The number of detections in 2015 is more than four times the number of detections recorded by NIFSP in 2004.

The main reason for the increase is because the NIRSP reduced the threshold at which a driver can be detected.
