Maghera man could not remember possessing drugs in Portrush nightclub

John McCusker of Meetinghouse Avenue appeared at the Coleraine court on Thursday to face two charges of possessing class B drugs.

The court heard that police were called to Kelly’s nightclub on March 14 last year following a report that staff had detained a male on suspicion of possessing drugs.

When police spoke to the defendant they found two clear plastic bags - one containing a white powder and one containing traces of powder.

When arrested the defendant said “It’s my own and it’s meth”.

Defence for the 26-year-old gardener said that his client was so intoxicated on the night in question that he had no recollection of how he came into possession of the drugs but accepted that he had acquired them somehow.

He said that McCusker had accepted the matter at the earliest opportunity and added that the defendant had “no desire” to come before the courts again.

McCusker was fined a total of £150 for both offences and ordered to pay an offenders levy of £15.

District Magistrate Mr White made a destruction order for the drugs.
