Maghera man shouted abuse during Remembrance Day parade

Connla Scullion (24), of Meetinghouse Avenue, admitted charges of disorderly behaviour, and resisting police at Coleraine Road on November 11 last year.

A prosecuting lawyer said Scullion had come out of a hotel shouting ‘wankers’ and other abuse at police officers who asked him to go away.

She said Scullion continued swearing in the street and eventually had to be restrained using CSpray.

A defence lawyer said to his credit Scullion had stayed out of trouble since the incident.

Passing sentence, District Judge Des Perry said it was appalling behaviour during a sombre occasion.

And a former Magherafelt man who shouted ‘F..k you’ at a passing police car, was given a one-month suspended jail sentence when he appeared at the same court.

Nigel Stewart (39), of Rockmills, Strand Road, Londonderry, admitted disorderly behaviour at Queen’s Street, Magherafelt, on July 21 last.

The prosecuting lawyer said the incident happened in the early hours and there was no one else on the street at the time.

A defence lawyer said Stewart had been out drinking with friends and had got agitated as he thought the police were going to pick on him for a search.

The lawyer stressed defendant has been off drugs since relocating to the Derry area.
