Magherafelt-based Mountain Rescue volunteers rescue woman injured on Slemish

The real rescue, comes just a few months after the Mail experienced the team in action at the very same spot.

The woman, who was operated on at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital, following her ordeal, has thanked NWMR for their help.

She posted on their Facebook page: “Want to say a massive thank you to all of you for getting me down safely,” she said.

“I hope I didn’t talk too much rubbish!!

“Am heading for Royal to theatre in the morning (Monday), but just glad it’s only my ankle things could’ve been much worse.

“Again I cannot express my gratitude for the emergency services for your help yesterday.”

A spokesperson for NWMR said: “Over 20 volunteers from the team, including some from as far away as our Central Section in Magherafelt, responded to a call from the PSNI to help a walker, reported injured on Slemish Mountain.

“She had suffered an injury to her ankle.”

“After a long process, lasting nearly two hours and involving detailed technical equipment, skills and sheer sweat, she was carried safely by stretcher to our colleagues in Northern Ireland Ambulance Service - some of whom joined us on the procedure on the hill to administer direct medical care.”
