Magherafelt man drove home drunk from night-shift

A Latvian man who admitted to driving home drunk from the night shift at work after an argument with a co-worker has been banned from the road for 12 months and must pay fines totalling £315.

Orlovs Nikolajs, who lives on Meeting Street, Magherafelt, appeared before Magistrates on April 22.

Outlining the case against him, the prosecution described how the engineering worker was seen driving erratically on the Castledawson Road at 7.40am on November 25 last year.

And that when PSNI officers went to his house, they found his vehicle to be warm to touch and detected a strong smell of alcohol from the defendant.

Nikolajs told police he had been drinking at work that morning and that his son collected him and brought him home - but his son was not at the property.

The defendant failed a preliminary breath test at the scene with a reading of 87mg and after being arrested, police found car keys in his pocket and later, a bottle of whiskey.

Judge Kelly also ruled that he must retake his NI test before driving again.
