Magherafelt man ‘lost back end of the car’ in Portstewart

A Magherafelt man who was seen ‘fishtailing’ his car along a road in Portstewart has been fined at North Antrim Magistrates’ Court.

Sitting on Thursday, the court heard that on May 18th this year, a BMW was seen to exit Mill Road roundabout and ‘fishtail’ along the Coleraine Road in Portstewart.

Two other vehicles were forced to brake due to the action and a number of pedestrians were walking in the 30mph area at the time.

When police stopped the car, the defendant Stephen Peter Hurley told police “I lost the back end of the car as I turned round the roundabout.”

The defendant from Beechland Drive said that while he was not the owner of the car, he did have permission to drive it.

He elected to produce his driving documents at Magherafelt PSNI station but failed to do so in the allotted time.

Defence for the 27-year -old said that while it was a bad piece of driving, “no one had been seriously inconvenienced as a result of it”.

He added that his client had some difficulty in finding his driving documents.

District Judge Mr White fined Hurley £100 for driving without due care and attention.

He was also fined £50 on each charge of failing to produce insurance and failing to produce a driving licence.

He was banned from driving for six months and had an offenders levy of £15 imposed.
