Magherafelt ‘masterplan’ should be revisited - McLean

The regeneration of Magherafelt town centre should be ‘put on hold’ until the £40 million by-pass road has been completed.

DUP councillor Paul McLean says he is planning to lead a delegation of unionist councillors to meet Roads Minister Danny Kennedy in the near future.

Magherafelt District Council heard last week that the Department for Social Development had awarded £90,000 to appoint an consultant to prepare the public realm scheme, which has been hit by departmental budget constraints

Details of the ‘masterplan’ were first published in the summer of 2011 and were generally welcomed by the public and business community.

The Sinn Fein controlled council decided to press ahead with the scheme despite being told that the Department of Social Development would only be providing a fraction of the estimated £2.3 million funding.

At the monthly meeting last week, Sinn Fein group leader councillor Sean McPeake again urged the council to keep the scheme on track.

But councillor McLean told the Mail that now was a good time to revisit the public realm scheme with the preparatory work already started on the by-pass.
