Magherafelt's 'potholes' to be repaired in overnight works

Work is to be carried out on a stretch of road between Market Street and Fairhill by an NI Water contractor.

Local political representatives have received scores of complaints about the condition of the surface - potholes which have got bigger over the winter.

Sinn Féin councillor Darren Totten said he has made representations to the Transport NI and Department of Infrastructure following complaints from local motorists.

"The road surface has become badly cut up in recent days and the resurfacing work is long overdue," he said.

DUP councillor Paul McLean said he has been "inundated" with complaints from angry motorists.

"I nearly tore the bottom out of my car driving through the town centre such is the condition of the surface," he said. "I've never seen it so bad and it should never have been allowed to get into this state."

The Market Street/Meeting Street and Kirk Avenue/Fairhill area of Magherafelt will be closed to traffic overnight and traffic diversions will be in place until 6.00am on Tuesday.
