Major extension plan for Whiteabbey park and ride

The public transport company revealed that it is hoping to create an additional 40 - 50 parking spaces at the site, taking the total number to more than 120.

A Translink spokesperson said that while the project is still awaiting final approvals, work could commence on-site within the next seven months.

“Translink has plans to develop the park and ride facility at Whiteabbey Train Station, funded by the Department for Regional Development, which would provide between 40 - 50 additional parking spaces for rail passengers,” the spokesperson explained.

“However, this project is subject to land purchase agreement and all other statutory approvals with a view to commence work by the end of the financial year (2015/16).”

Welcoming the planned extension at the well-used park and ride facility, North Belfast MLA Paula Bradley said: “The park and ride facility at Whiteabbey is extremely popular with local commuters who can leave their cars and travel onwards by train. Unfortunately, the current capacity for parking on the site is inadequate and this has caused difficulties with cars congesting nearby residential streets.

“Having submitted a question in the Assembly to the Minister for Regional Development, I was delighted to receive confirmation that approval has been given for Translink to develop an extension of 49 additional parking spaces.”

The DUP representative continued: “I have been advised that Translink’s procurement process for the main contract for this project is well progressed and, subject to formalisation of the land conveyance process, it is hoped to commence works before the end of 2015.

“This is excellent news for both commuters and local residents alike and will considerably address congestion problems in the area.”
