Major plans for Laganbank are revealed

The Minister paid a visit to Lisburn this week for the launch of the consultation on the office and mixed use development proposals for the Laganbank area.

The Scheme’s main objective is to regenerate the Laganbank Quarter area of Lisburn by enhancing the city centre’s regional role and strengthening links with the River Lagan.

Encouraging the public to take the time to give their views on the Development Scheme proposals, Minister McCausland said: “My Department considers it essential to maintain and enhance the overall vitality and viability of Lisburn.

“The City of Lisburn has great potential at a regional level and I welcome the proposals in this Development Scheme in helping to achieve that potential.

“I believe it is important that local communities have an input in shaping the future of the areas in which they live and work. A healthy city needs a healthy heart and this Development Scheme is directed at strengthening the heart of Lisburn. I would encourage people to share their views and comments to ensure that the Development Scheme accurately represents a shared and inclusive vision for all of Lisburn.”

The consultation runs until the 7 November can be accessed on the DSD website at www.dsdni.gov.uk/index/consultations.htm.

Supporting the proposals for the Development Scheme, the Deputy Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor Thomas Beckett said: “This Development Scheme will transform the city centre for the people of Lisburn, both in economic and social terms, and deliver a stronger, more competitive Lisburn for the future. The Council are supporting this consultation as they are keen to hear the views of all those who are interested.”

Alderman Allan Ewart, Chair of Lisburn City Council’s Economic Development Committee added: “The Laganbank Quarter Development Scheme is important for the future of Lisburn. With the city centre heavily dependent on retail uses to sustain activity and economic wellbeing, the scheme will bring opportunities to diversify the economic base. The future development of the area as planned will see mixed use and office based opportunities created establishing a new business district.

“We encourage everyone to provide their feedback on the shaping of this exciting plan.”
