Major £100k road scheme in 
Ballinderry Lower completed

Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy announced this week the completion of sections of the Aghalee Road which were resurfaced in conjunction with the installation of road humps on Aghalee Road, Crumlin Road and Lower Ballinderry Road.

Mr Kennedy said: “The traffic calming scheme and resurfacing scheme is now helping reduce vehicle speeds throughout the village and improve road safety for all road users, particularly vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.”

Speaking about the benefits of traffic calming measures, the Minister continued: “My Department is committed to playing its part in achieving the targets set by The Northern Ireland Road Safety Strategy through the implementation of road safety engineering measures.

“It is in this context a high priority is given to the introduction of traffic calming schemes in residential areas. Scheme like these help ensure that vehicles are driven at speeds that are appropriate to local conditions.”

Traffic calming measures in the form of gateway signing was provided in Lower Ballinderry village by Roads Service a number of years ago.

In recent years, residents and local representatives raised concerns about vehicle speeds and expressed a desire for further traffic calming measures, in the form of road humps, to help tackle this problem.

Local Ulster Unionist Council Candidate Alexander Redpath commented; “This investment will make Lower Ballinderry a safer more child friendly village. I thank Minister Kennedy for his ongoing commitment to the greater Lisburn area.”
