Major revamp for Megaw Park

Welcoming the project Leisure Chairman, Alderman Frank Campbell, said: “These playing fields have a long association with the town and community of Ballymoney. Purchased and equipped in 1934 by the Honourable Mr Justice Megaw as a memorial to his Aunt and Uncle, the town council took responsibility for it in the early 1950’s and over the years various upgrades and additions have been carried out. Megaw Park is as relevant now to the local community as it was when originally established and I am delighted the park is to get a significant upgrade with the injection of over 1 ¼ million pounds investment by Council.”

Under the comprehensive scheme at the Coleraine Road facility a new pavilion, including a warden’s office, will provide improved changing facilities for the existing soccer pitch. A mix of traditional and interactive play equipment will be included in a new children’s play area. Adults will be able to work out in a new ‘tone zone’ which incorporates a range of outdoor gym equipment, while, a new trim trail and adventure play area will provide a range of exciting and challenging play equipment for teenagers.

Three new tennis courts, with an all year round polymeric surface will replace the existing courts. A new ‘sand mattress’ soccer pitch suitable for under age players will complete the new facility.

Access to the facility will be improved, with a parking area for 60 cars in addition to provision for disabled users and coach parking.

Commenting on the upgrade of Megaw Park, Mayor John Finlay said: “The new facility offers fantastic facilities to benefit the local area for years to come, featuring a range of modern equipment to test the abilities and fuel the imagination of children, teenagers and adults alike. The investment and refurbishment makes sure the park offers a range of quality sports play and recreational facilities and also leaves it well placed to host various community events”

The park will close on 3rd February to facilitate the 22 week contract works.
