Major water scheme to start

A major water scheme was set to commence in February 1986.

The announcement to link McVeigh’s Well in Carnmoney to the Old park storage reservoir, was made in January 1986. The new Belfast transfer main would link the two as the first step in completely interlinking Belfast’s three main water supplies. The work was expected to take 18 months to complete and was set to cost £1.6m. When the larger project to completely join up Belfast’s water supplies was finished, water from different sources would be able to be transferred between parts of the city according to changing patterns of demand. A DOE spokesman said the work would allow excess water capacity in Carrick- caused by a decline in demand- to be switched to Belfast.
