Make a difference to Coleraine's elderly

1/3 of older people in Northern Ireland say that they feel lonely' says Helen McWilliams, Acting Manager at Age NI's Coleraine Shop.

At this time of year in particular, feelings of loneliness can be even more pronounced but we can all make a difference to the lives of older relatives, neighbours and friends.

‘Age NI’s No one should have no one at Christmas campaign highlights the issue of loneliness in later life and encourages us all to look out for older people we know. Just lift the phone to say hello, call by for a chat, help a neighbour bring in their bins, or offer a lift to the shops – older people tell us often that little gestures can make a big difference.

‘Services like Age NI day centres and the Age NI Advice Service are providing companionship, advice and support to thousands of people every year. Age NI shops support the work of the charity by providing invaluable income through sales and donations. Our shops are also community hubs where we often see familiar faces who call in, not just for a browse, but a good chat too!

‘This Christmas, people in Coleraine can help Age NI to support people who are facing later life alone by popping into our shop for a thrifty Christmas outfit or festive gift! We have a great range of new and pre-loved clothes and homeware. And if you’re having a pre-Christmas clear out, please drop your unwanted items into our store at 26C Railway Road, Coleraine, BT52 1PD – we’d be delighted to see you!’
