Make a Noise in Libraries

Make a Noise in Libraries Fortnight 2012 is celebrated in Northern Ireland libraries from 11th June - 24th June and during this time, local libraries are making an extra special effort to encourage blind and partially sighed people to visit their local library to find out what is available.

Books are a great way to share experiences, explore ideas and link up with other people who share a passion for reading. Nearly two million people in the UK are living with sight loss and for many blind and partially sighted people, reading also helps to reduce isolation and plays an essential role in their health and well-being.

There is a range of library services available to people with additional needs, including people who are blind or partially sighted.

· Large print - all libraries have a wide range of books in larger than average print

· Audiobooks - libraries offer books on CD which, like printed books, are free to borrow

· Homecall Library Service – Libraries NI has a fleet of mobile libraries across Northern Ireland which call at the homes of people unable to get to their local library due to illness or frailty

· eBooks and downloadable audiobooks are available from the Libraries NI website www.librariesni.org.uk

· RNIB Talking Books – Libraries NI pays an annual subscription to this CD library for people who are blind/partially sighted and have been referred by their Sensory Support worker.
