Making some Economique sense

How easy it would be to simply say that this car is just another low emission model, some of which are dull and uninspiring to drive; not so with this Peugeot.

I spent almost a week in company with this 207 and it has left a lasting impression, apart from the absence of a road tax payment, it turned put to be very lively in the performance stakes and economical.

Power comes in two guises with a 1.6 litre diesel engine, 90bhp in the standard version and 112bhp in the + version. Rest to 62mph comes up in some 11 seconds and top speed with the + version is 120mph.

Now for the really good news, on the fuel front and on the combined fuel cycle, the figure is an impressive 74mpg. For me the needle of the fuel gauge hardly moved, very satisfying as the cost of fuel seems to rise almost on a weekly basis.

With all this talk of economy, you might think that the 207 Economique is sparsely turned out. Nothing could be further from the truth, this car is well appointed.

Both versions are equipped with ABS with EBFD and EBA, side airbags, remote control central locking with deadlocks, passenger airbag and driver airbag and power steering assisted steering.

For ease of storage, 2/3 - 1/3 split folding rear seat, electric front windows with 'one touch' for driver.

Providing information on the move is the on board computer and a nice touch is the

chrome insert to the gear knob.

Air conditioning plus a number of cosmetic enhancements distinguishes the + version from the standard.

Choice is further provided with two bodystyles to select from, three or five door; my test 207 Economique was in the sportier three door guise.

When it comes to driver satisfaction, the 207 has always been a firm favourite and this low emission version is just as much fun to drive as other members of the 207 family.

I found this car ideal for driving in town, so easy to park, thanks to excellent all round visibility, yet take it on the motorway and it cruises effortlessly at the legal limit and as you drive you are rewarded with excellent economy.
