Man and woman rescued from sinking boat

A man and a woman have been rescued from their sinking boat off Castlerock beach.

The pair issued a Mayday alert on their radio when their two-berth vessel started sinking about 150 metres from the shore on Sunday afternoon.

Two RNLI lifeguards based on Castlerock beach immediately responded.

They took a rescue craft out to the sinking boat and brought the two people back to shore.

RNLI supervisor Stuart Montgomery said: “This was a great result for the lifeguards who are equipped to resond to a variety of callouts.

“The two people in the water did everything right from raising the alarm to wearing the correct equipment.

“As well as the RNLI lifeguards on Castlerock beach who responded to the emergency, the charity’s lifeguards from the surrounding beaches of Portstewart and Downhill were also made ready to respond.”
