A prosecutor told Antrim Magistrates Court on Tuesday the incident happened on March 2 at the house the pensioner shared with his son.

Alistair Shiels (52) of Bush Park in Antrim appeared at the court via video link from Maghaberry Prison and admitted charges of assaulting his father; causing criminal damage to his father’s furniture and assaulting and resisting a police officer.

Defence barrister Neil Moore said the attack was “abhorrent”.

District Judge Oonagh Mullan said Shiels “should be ashamed” of himself and she said the matter was aggravated by the age of his father.

The judge imposed a six months prison term suspended for two years.

She also put in place a Restraining Order banning Shiels from contacting his father or entering the Bush Park address.
