Londonderry Magistrates Court heard police were dealing with a suspicious device when Doherty approached the police cordon. He told officers to “f*** off that bomb isn’t for me, it’s for you”.

The 23-year-old then walked off up the street and told officers “you won’t stop me walking up”.

He then walked into a police officer and was pushed back.

The court heard he began swinging his arms and kicked a police officer on the leg and the mouth.

When the officers asked him for his details he claimed he was Mr Myagi from Japan, the court was told.

Defence solicitor Paul Kearney said the entire incident was “borne out of drink” and there was “nothing more sinister at play”.

He said police were trying to protect members of the public from a potentially dangerous situation and Doherty should have just gone on his way.

Deputy District Judge Peter King said he was left with “very little option” and jailed Doherty for two months
