Man at risk of prison after driving offences

A 32 year old man with a ‘dreadful driving record’ was warned he could be facing a prison sentence when he appeared last Friday at Craigavon Court.

Barry Peter Coary, Dill Avenue, Lurgan, admitted driving without insurance or a licence on April 17.

He also pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour on July 25.

The court heard that on April 17 he was stopped while driving at Northway and he did not have a licence or insurance.

His solicitor said this was a DLA car. The defendant had considerable difficulties with his back and other people drove the vehicle.

He added that on this occasion there was no-one available so Coary took it on himself to drive. The car had been returned to motability.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said he was concerned about the frequency of the defendant’s offending.

He pointed out that Coary had been convicted of dangerous driving and not having insurance. He had also received a suspended sentence in April and a few days after that was driving again.

Judge Bates said this was ‘completely inexcusable’.

On July 25 in the early hours of the morning two men were knocking at a door in Dill Avenue, Lurgan.

The defendant became aggressive and started to swear. Police asked him to calm down but he did not and had to be restrained.

Judge Bates adjourned the case until September 19 for a pre-sentence report.
