Man bent police handcuffs

Albert Ronald Willis, Birchdale, Lurgan, was fined £100 last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for resisting a police officer on November 2 this year.

He was also fined £100 for damaging the handcuffs, £90 for disorderly behaviour and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy.

The court heard Willis was causing a disturbance outside the golf club and refused to leave. On a number of occasions he was told to go home and was offered a taxi but he refused to go.

He tried to get around police and back into the club.

When he was arrested for disorderly behaviour he resisted and handcuffs had to be used. He bent them out of shape making them unuseable.

Mr Paul Haughey, representing the defendant, said Willis would apologise to the patrons of the club and the police officers.

He added that when the defendant sobered up he was concerned if he had caused any physical harm to an officer but there was no assault.

Mr Haughey said Willis was entirely contrite for ‘this most unfortunate incident’ which was out of character.
