Man brandished golf club at police

Michael Wylie, (28), Church Road, Portadown, admitted resisting police and assaulting a constable on April 11 this year. The court heard that police were called to a domestic incident where the defendant was in an upstairs bedroom holding a golf club

He was the subject of a bench warrant but said he would not co-operate. He grabbed the golf club and refused to put it down before it was pulled from him by officers. Wylie struggled and then spat in the direction of one of the officers.

Mr Hugo Marley, representing the defendant, said Wylie suffered from depression and on this occasion had not taken his medication. He and his partner had some sort of difficulty. He added that police had spoken to his client and he had calmed down but for some reason he picked up the club again. District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said the assault was serious when a weapon was brandished and kicking and spitting were aggravating features.

He adjourned the case until December 16 for a pre-sentence report.
