Man charged with causing death by dangerous driving

A BALLYMONEY man charged with causing the death of a university professor following a two vehicle car accident, has been before the court.

Last Wednesday Geoffrey William McLaughlin (38) of Ford Avenue in Stranocum, appeared before Deputy District Judge Peter King.

Professor Edmund Cairns died after he was involved in a road traffic accident on the Ballyrashane Road in Coleraine on February 16.

McLaughlin and his two sons, who were in the vehicle at the time, were also injured in the collision.

The defendant faces nine charges - causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of causing grievous bodily injury, doing an act with the intent of perverting the course of justice, fraud, failing to wear a seatbelt, driving when unfit and two counts of carrying a child without a seat belt.

McLaughlin was connected to the charges by a police constable.

A spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service told the court that it was a “significant file” and that she would need eight weeks for an update.

The case was adjourned until October 24.

McLaughlin was released on his own bail of £350.
