Man fined for failing to secure shotgun

A local man will have to apply to the Secretary of State to have his firearms licence renewed after he was fined for failing to properly store his shotgun.

Alan William Foster, 42, from Netherlands Park in Dunmurry, appeared at Lisburn Magistrates Court this week charged with failing to comply with a condition of his firearms certificate.

The court heard that police were called to Netherlands Park in Dunmurry. During the call out, the police discovered a shotgun and 200 shotgun cartridges in the boot of the defendant’s car.

Defence said: “It was his practice to take it from a safe in his home to the boot of the car on a Saturday night as he is the secretary of a shotgun club, which he attends on a Sunday morning.”

Imposing a fine of £200, District Judge Rosie Watters told the defendant: “The car could easily have been stolen and it was not safe there.”
