Man grabbed constable’s cap, court told

A MECHANIC, who grabbed a policeman’s cap and ran off, was fined £200 at Magherafelt Magistrates Court.

Emmet Potter (23), of Camlough Road, Omagh, was also ordered to pay a £15 offenders levy for disorderly behaviour.

A PPS lawyer said the incident happened in the early hours of July 15 when the defendant exited a hot food carry out in Rainey Street car park shouting loudly and incoherently.

He said the defendant grabbed the police officer’s cap and ran off across the park shouting “f...k you bastards”.

The lawyer said police pursued the defendant across the car park and retrieved the cap.

A defence barrister described it as “essentially a misguided prank.”

He explained that the defendant had too much to drink and had grabbed the officer’s hat and ran off.
