Robert Sharkey (44), of Ballycranny Drive, Coleraine appeared at court last Thursday for sentencing on a charge of possessing a prohibited weapon,

The short hearing was told he had said to police the stun gun didn’t work and was “falling apart”.

A prosecutor said it was tested and it worked.

Defence solicitor Sam Barr said the forensic scientist had to re-assemble it and put a battery in it.

He said the item had been placed in a drawer a long time ago and had been forgotten about.

He said his client is a father of four children aged between one and 18 and a reference shows he is a man who “gives back to the community”.

District Judge Chris Holmes said the community should be aware such stun guns are illegal and they should not be in possession of them.

The defendant was bound over to be of good behaviour for a year on the sum of £500 and he is banned from possessing such devices.
