Man jailed for four months

A Lurgan man was given a four month prison sentence last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for driving while disqualified.

Jeffrey Johnston (47) of Ardboe Drive admitted the offence on April 29 this year.

He also admitted driving without having insurance at Mourne Road.

Defence said he had a number of previous convictions for driving without insurance and one previous for driving while disqualified.

He explained that the defendant was a self-employed mechanic. He had fixed a customer’s car and was taking it to the customer’s house when stopped.

The solicitor said that a pre-sentence report assessed Johnston as a medium risk of re-offending.

District Judge, Mr Alan White, said Johnston had 10 previous convictions for no insurance and had two previous suspended sentences and imposed a four month term on each charge.

Johnston was released on bail to appeal against the sentence.
