Man jailed for three months for having drugs

They entered the room on June 13 this year and spoke to Kelvin James Kane (21), of Coleraine Road, Portstewart, and he admitted he had smoked a joint.

Cannabis resin, mephedrone and six Ecstasy tablets were found in his pockets.

He appeared before Coleraine Magistrates Cout last Monday via video link from Maghaberry Prison and a defence lawyer said he was in breach of High Court bail in connection with another case.

Kane admitted possessing drugs and was jailed for three months.

* A Coleraine man has been charged with supplying Class B drugs.

Jason Christopher Booth (28), of Greenmount Park, appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court on Monday June 27. He is charged with supplying cannabis and methadrone on January 5 this year and is also charged with possession of the drugs.

A prosecutor asked for the case to go to Ballymena Magistrates Court on July 21 to keep it with two co-accused.

* A man caught with cannabis after being released from prison has been fined £200.

Aidan McMullan (35), of Coleraine Road, Portstewart, had the offence detected after police attended Coleraine’s Church Street on June 10 in relation to a male causing a disturbance. £2.50 worth of cannabis resin was found and he admitted the small amount was for his own use.

Defence solicitor Derwin Harvey said the defendant had no bail address after getting out of jail and ended up back on the streets consuming alcohol.

“Some one on the street gave him cannabis. Drugs are not his thing,” added Mr Harvey.

* A car cigarette lighter popped out and landed at a driver’s feet causing him to swerve and hit a kerb before the vehicle crashed onto a grass verge and struck a street pole in Coleraine, a defence lawyer claimed in court.

Defence lawyer Brendan McLernon was speaking about Marcin Marzec (35), a joiner of Brook Street, Coleraine, who appeared at the town’s Magistrates Court on Monday June 27 and admitted charges of driving with excess alcohol as well as the absence of insurance and a driving licence.

A prosecutor said a car was spotted driving without lights on at Greenhall Highway in Coleraine at 2am on Saturday April 9 this year before it crashed into a pole.

Two men were standing beside the damaged Peugeot 206 and when initially spoken to by police they alleged the driver had made off but when Marzec was searched he had the car keys. The men would not say who was driving and both failed an alcohol test.

Marzec had a reading of 72 with the legal limit being 35 and he later admitted he had been behind the wheel.

Mr McLernon said the defendant had been drinking and foolishly decided to drive to a filing station to get some goods when “the cigarette lighter in the car popped out into the footwell and he served and hit the kerb”.

District Judge Liam McNally said it was Marzec’s second drink drive conviction and he banned him from the road for three years and fined him a total of £450.
