Man let an uninsured person drive his car

When he let another person drive his car a 35-year-old man just assumed he had a licence and insurance.

But that was not the case and last Thursday at the local court Colin Meeke, Larchwood Crescent, Banbridge, was fined £250 and given six points for allowing someone to drive without having insurance.

He was also fined £150 and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy for permitting him to drive without a licence.

The court heard that on May 31 this year at 3.30am the defendant was a passenger in a vehicle which was stopped by police. The driver had no licence or insurance.

Meeke, who was intoxicated at the time, was the owner of the vehicle and had allowed the other person to drive.

He said he just presumed the other person had a licence and insurance. District Judge, Mr Paul Copeland, said that a letter sent to the court by the defendant set out the facts in mitigation and expressed remorse.
