Man punched in racist attack

A MAN suffered minor injuries after being punched in the face by a gang of youths shouting racist abuse in Londonderry

Police are appealing for witnesses after the man was assaulted on the Abercorn Road during the early hours of Sunday (31st).

A group of foreign nationals were confronted by a group of youths and subjected to racial abuse. One of the foreign nationals was punched in the mouth sustaining a minor injury.

Anyone who was in the area between 1.45am and 2am and could help police with their enquiries is asked to contact Strand Road on 0845 600 8000. Alternatively information can be passed on anonymously through the "Crimestoppers" charity on freephone 0800 555 111.

Racist incidents rose by 66 per cent in Londonderry over the past year according to the latest hate crime statistics available from the Police

Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).

Ten more racist incidents were reported last year than in 2007/8 according to the PSNI Annual Statistical Report.

There were 35 incidents reported to police here between April 2008 and April 2009.
