Man seriously injured

Three men were arrested on Monday on suspicion of attempted murder following a serious assault on a man in Toomebridge.

Police said they received a report of a fight outside a licensed premises on the Hillhead Road at about 2am on Sunday.

The man was taken to Antrim Area Hospital suffering from a head injury and was later transferred to intensive care at the RVH. A spokeswoman for the Belfast Trust said his condition was “critical”.

The Hillhead Road was closed for a time following the report of the assault while police carried out investigations.

Local Sinn Féin Councillor Ian Milne has appealed for anyone with information on the serious assault to come forward.

“The assault on this man in Toome in the early hours of Sunday morning has caused widespread shock in the local area,” he said.

He added: “A man has been left in a very serious condition in hospital following this incident and hopefully he can make a full recovery.

“I would appeal for anyone with any information on this incident to bring it forward to the PSNI immediately.”
