Man shot in Bogside

A MAN has been shot in Londonderry's Bogside area.

The 24-year-old victim was wounded in the leg after three masked men forced their way into a house in Cable Street at around 10pm last night (Wednesday, April 13).

One of the gang went to an upstairs bedroom and fired a number of shots, none of which hit the man.

A second member of the gun gang then went upstairs and shot the man once in the back of his leg. The attackers then escaped via the back door of the house.

The injuries caused to the victim are not believed to be life threatening.

The PSNI in the city have appealed for information. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the shooting. Dissident republicans have been behind a spate of shootings in Londonderry in recent months.

Sinn Fin Councillor for the Bogside and Brandywell area Patricia Logue has stated that the shooting of a 24 year old man in the area on Tuesday night will achieve nothing and has called on those responsible to desist from these actions.

Councillor Logue said: "This is the latest in a series of shootings in Derry over recent months. It will achieve nothing and I would call on those responsible to desist from these actions and engage positively with the community in order to actively create community safety partnerships and accountable policing so that we can bring an end to these incidents."
