A man who heard the shots said he thought he would find a corpse..

"I heard a few shots. I heard the awful screaming," he said.

"Then I heard about five or six shots after that. I thought I was going to go out and see a young fella lying dead in the lane.

"But he was awake, quite aware of what was going on and said he was shot twice in the leg."

Similar attacks in the city over the past year have been variously claimed by the dissident republican group the Real IRA acting under the moniker Oglaigh na hireann, and the group styling itself Republican Action Against Drugs RAAD.

But police in Foyle have said they are still investigating what may have motivated the shooting and have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
