Man shot in Londonderry city centre

A MAN has been shot several times in a shop in Londonderry city centre, in an incident described by Foyle MP, Mark Durkan as an "act of barbarism".

The man - in his 50s - was taken to hospital and police have said his condition is serious,

At about 5.30pm on Wednesday, a man wearing a motorcycle helmet entered a shop at Waterloo Place in the city and shot the victim several times in the lower body.

Police are reviewing CCTV in the area, and detectives have appealed for anyone who witnessed the attack or saw a motorcyclist acting suspiciously in the area to contact them.

SDLP Leader Mark Durkan has condemned the shooting.

Mr Durkan said: "Acts such as this...terrible shooting in Waterloo Street have no place in the Derry we are building.

"The whole community in our city rejects this act of barbarism. Anyone with information should contact the PSNI so that those responsible are brought to justice."
