Man smeared excrement onpolice cell

Coleraine Magistrates Court was told lastMonday, David Samuel McCrudden (31), of Laurel Mount Road, had been arrested after earlier being found in possession of 45 Diazepam tablets at a pub in Portstewart.

A prosecutor said on November 11 last year after an incident at the bar police found McCrudden had the tablets in a wallet and later when he caused damage to Cell Seven at Coleraine Police Station it cost £120 to bring in a professional cleaner.

Defence solicitor Garrett Greene tolkd the hearing that his client used the Diazepam to “self-medicate” after suffering a brain injury in a road traffic collision.

He said McCrudden was “incoherently drunk” and had been in a “distressed condition” at the police station but had attempted to clean up the mess himself in the cell but by the nature of what had happened professional cleaners were needed.

Mr Greene said McCrudden had apologised for his conduct.

McCrudden pleaded guilty to charges of possession of Diazepam and criminal damage to the police cell and the case was adjourned to February 1 for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.
