South African Jens Giesel, 36, who has an address at the North Circular Road in Lisburn, appeared in Lisburn Magistrates Court this week to face two charges of theft.

The court heard that on July 29, the police were tasked to the Bow Street Mall in Lisburn after reports of a male acting suspiciously.

The police spoke to security staff at the Mall, who said the male had taken items from Dunnes Stores and from Sweetie Miller.

The defendant was then spoken to by the police, cautioned, and admitted he had taken the items, including sweets, magazines to the value of £6.82 and a packet of rubber ducks to the value of £2, without paying for them.

Giesel was interviewed and said it had been a mistake and that he was embarrassed about it.

Defence explained that, despite being granted police bail for these charges, Giesel was in custody on another charge and had been on remand since July 29.

He continued: “He has two children and his wife and children live at a separate address in Lisburn.

“He has been in Northern Ireland for five years.”

Defence added that Giesel had stolen the items to give to his children.

District Judge Rosie Watters said she had “no alternative but to impose an immediate custodial sentence.”

She imposed a sentence of one month in prison and activated a suspended sentence of three months, with both sentences to run concurrently.

Ms Watters also ordered the defendant to pay an Offender’s Levy of £25.
