Man stole Christmas presents from Tesco

An 18-year-old man was given a custodial sentence last Thursday at Banbridge Magistrates Court for a shoplifting offence.

Robert Cochrane, of no fixed abode, admitted the theft of two DVDs, one I-Pod and cable, to the total value of £168, from Tesco at the Outlet on December 9 last year.

He was sentenced to 12 weeks in custody.

Cochrane claimed he was trying to get Christmas presents for his niece and nephew and was leaving the shop to go to the bank machine.

A solicitor for Cochrane said the defendant was in custody and there was no accommodation for him if he was released.

He explained that he would be on the streets and within a week would be back in court.

Deputy District Judge, Mr John Connelly, said the accommodation issue would have to be dealt with by the social services.
