Man threw ‘glass bottle’ at police car in Magherafelt then escaped officers and hid

A 24-year-old Toomebridge man has been given one year’s probation and ordered to complete 60 hours community service for throwing a “glass bottle” at a police car.

Stephen McAleese from Elver Avenue pleaded guilty to the offence at Magherafelt Magistrates Court on Wednesday, May 6.

The Public Prosecution Service outlined how, on August 30 last year at around 11.40pm a police vehicle was struck by a glass object in the Queen’s Street area of Magherafelt.

Believed to be a glass bottle, the prosecution explained how the object smashed on impact but didn’t damage the vehicle.

The PPS then went on to say that the defendant provided false details to police for about 10 minutes, “then let slip his real name”, before running off and being found some time later hiding behind a car.

During police interview the court heard how the defendant made a full admission.

In his defence, counsel admitted that McAleese had a “substantial record” but pleaded for leniency as he had accepted the crime and pleaded guilty.

Passing sentence, Judge White said: “I am not just giving him probation. He has an atrocious record.”

He then added: “If you do not complete both you are going to jail.”
