Man to face gun charges

A PORTGLENONE man has been sent for trial on firearms charges.

Noel Stewart (56), of Main Street, faces nine charges of possessing prohibited weapons without the authority of the Secretary of State.

The charges relate to various types of pistols.

The offences are alleged to have been committed on dates in December 2008 and January 2009.

Solicitor Ciaran Shiels said Stewart had been a licensed firearms dealer for many years until his licence was suspended.

“It is an unusual case,” the solicitor added.

Stewart was returned for trial, on his own bail of 500, to Antrim Crown Court on February 11, following a preliminary enquiry at Ballymena Magistrates Court.
