Man told police: My uncle works for Police Ombudsman's office

A Coleraine man was disorderly in Portstewart and then told PSNI officers they couldn't touch him because his uncle worked for the Police Ombudsman's office - which he does not.

A solicitor for Sean Paul McNicholl (21) of Mount Street said that the defendant’s uncle does not work for the Ombudsman’s office but instead he had meant to say he was going to report the matter to the Police Ombudsman’s office.

At Coleraine Magistrates Court last Monday McNicholl pleaded guilty to being disorderly at Portstewart Promenade on December 15 last year.

A prosecutor told the court that police were tasked to an ongoing disturbance around midnight at Shenanigans and there were a number of incidents.

McNicholl was shouting and being aggressive and then left the area but entered the premises again and made the Ombudsman remark to police.

The defence solicitor told the short hearing that her client was out for the night and had no memory of the incident.

McNicholl was fined a total of £200.
