Man tragically killed in road incident

There was shock and sadness in Lisburn this week after a man in his sixties was tragically killed in a road traffic collision in the city centre on Monday (April 4).

The accident happened at the junction of Belfast Road and Wallace Avenue at around 3pm and roads were closed for several hours.

It is understood that the man, who is believed to be from the Lisburn area, was taken ill and crashed close to Seymour Street Methodist Church.

Lagan Valley MP Jeffrey Donaldson has expressed his sadness at the death of the local man and has extended his sympathy to the grieving family.

“This is very sad news, coming as it does so soon after the recent fatal accident on the Ballinderry Road,” said Mr Donaldson.

“I know that the police are investigating the circumstances of this particular collision but my thoughts and prayers are with the family of this man who has lost his life.

“We will be doing everything we canto support the family at this very difficult time.”

Lagan Valley MLA Jonathan Craig also extended his sympathies to the family.

“This is a very sad time and I would like to extend my thoughts and prayers to the family,” said Mr Craig.

“This was an extremely unfortunate accident and I don’t believe anything untoward happened, This was 100% accidental.

“It was almost an act of God, which cannot be accounted for. It is very, very said for the family concerned and my thoughts and prayers are with the family and with those involved or who witnessed the accident.”

The police are continuing their inquiries and have appealed for witnesses to the accident to come forward.

Inspector Jim McGrillen said: “I would ask anyone who witnessed the collision to contact Lisburn Police Station or the Collision Investigation Unit on the non-emergency number 101.”
