Many hands make light work

One of the highlights of the UK City of Culture Year, Lumiere, will open tomorrow, Thursday, at 17 sites across the city.

And, for the NIE’s first year apprentices it’s a case of all hands on deck as they help with The Travellers installation, Cedric Le Borgne’s amazing illuminated figures, on the Peace Bridge.

Six NIE plant maintenance apprentices and two instructors helped to lay the cable for the 12 figures which will be suspended in and around the bridge and illuminated during the festival which begins on Thursday.

The Lumiere festival is taking place over four nights in Londonderry from Thursday, November 28 to Sunday, December 1 as part of the UK City of Culture celebrations. A total of 17 different installations will be located in and around the city on both sides of the River Foyle, turning the city into one huge outdoor gallery.

Derek Curran, NIE apprentice instructor, said “We’ve been more than happy to come down and help out. It’s a bit of a change from our day to day activities. We’ve been running cables across the bridge as part of this big light installation which will really transform the city.”

NIE has been training apprentices for over 30 years. Its overhead lines training school is based at the company’s depot just outside Derry-Londonderry in Campsie. For more information on NIE’s apprenticeships visit www.nie.co.uk.
